Student Spotlight: Joanne B

About Jo B

Hi, I’m Jo B — a Nutrition and Health Coach and Psychotherapist based in the UK. My background is in mental health, and over time I became increasingly aware of how deeply our physical and emotional wellbeing are connected. This led me to explore the role that food, lifestyle, and behaviour play in supporting overall health — not just for my clients, but in my own life too.

Combining psychotherapy with nutrition coaching has opened up a new way for me to help people make meaningful, sustainable changes. Through my training with IINH, I’ve been able to bring this vision to life — and I’m excited to share a bit of my journey with you.

What inspired you to pursue a career in Nutrition & Health Coaching or Nutritional Therapy?

My career in mental health led me to recognise the ever-increasing part that nutrition and lifestyle play in our overall health. I had experienced personally how my health challenges had benefitted from a whole-food, holistic approach.

I wanted to be able to help clients understand how and why they might make sustainable nutrition and lifestyle changes that could impact both their physical and mental well-being. I believe that psychotherapy techniques combined with health and nutrition knowledge are a complementary mix and a powerful pathway for delivering the sustainable change clients are seeking.

Where have you used your coaching skills?

  • Private Clients

  • Personal growth

Can you describe a memorable experience or achievement since graduating?

Since graduating, I have been developing a specialist service for women who are struggling with ADHD. These women can find diet, lifestyle, and weight management especially complicated and are particularly vulnerable during perimenopause and menopause due to hormone changes. They can struggle to find the right type of support and understanding. I am adapting the way I work to support the neurodivergence of this client group.

How has your training influenced your approach to health and wellness?

I have fallen back in love with cooking. After bringing up two sons, cooking was very much a chore, and I dreaded the everyday question: “What’s for tea?” But I really enjoy cooking again now — experimenting with new recipes, improving the nutrition content of old favourites, and sharing them with others. I never thought that would happen!

What would you say to someone thinking about studying with IINH?

Before I signed up with IINH, I researched other courses. There are plenty out there, and it can be tricky to work out which is the right one — but I kept coming back to IINH. The heritage of the college, the wealth of experience, and the emphasis on nutrition stood out to me.

I felt a connection with the IINH “family,” and this has remained with me post-qualification. So if this appeals to you, and this is what you are looking for, you have come to the right place!
