Hormones, Microbes and Mucosa: Understanding the Vaginal Ecosystem

with Lynne Dalton

A Webinar for Nutritional Therapists

Session Overview

The vaginal ecosystem is a dynamic and highly regulated environment shaped by hormonal signalling, microbial communities, and mucosal immunity. Across the lifespan — from puberty through reproductive years and into menopause — fluctuations in oestrogen and progesterone profoundly influence microbial composition, epithelial integrity, pH balance, and host defence mechanisms. Disruption to this delicate interplay can contribute to vaginal dysbiosis, recurrent infections, and wider urogenital or systemic symptoms.

This webinar explores the functional relationships between hormones, microbes, and mucosal tissues, providing a clinically relevant framework for understanding vaginal health and dysfunction. Drawing on current research, participants will gain clarity on how to recognise imbalance and apply practical reasoning to real-world case scenarios.

Learning Outcomes for Nutritional therapists:

  • A clear overview of the physiological foundations of the vaginal ecosystem, including hormonal regulation and mucosal immunity.

  • An understanding of the bidirectional relationship between sex hormones and the vaginal microbiome across different life stages.

  • The ability to identify key features of vaginal dysbiosis and differentiate common patterns of imbalance.

  • Insight into contributory lifestyle, metabolic, and endocrine factors influencing vaginal health.

  • Practical application of knowledge through structured case study analysis to strengthen clinical reasoning.

We have allocated time for a post-webinar Q&A with participants.

CPD points: 1 personal or NTOI registered point (contact ciara@iinh.net for Cert afterwards)
