GLP-1s in Practice: A Guide for Nutrition & Health Coaches

with Nikki Coughlan

GLP-1 medications are rapidly changing the landscape of obesity treatment, and many health coaches and nutritional therapists are now working with clients who are using – or considering – these therapies.

In this session, Nikki will share insights from her work supporting clients on GLP-1 medications, including semaglutide and tirzepatide, within a multidisciplinary obesity care setting. The focus will be on the health coach’s role – how coaching adapts when appetite, motivation, and long-standing eating behaviours shift, and where coaches can add the greatest value alongside medical treatment.

The session will explore:

  • A high-level overview of what GLP-1s are and how they work, with emphasis on appetite regulation, satiety, and changes in food-related cues.
  • Common GLP-1 medications currently in use (and the next ones to become available) , and what health coaches need to kno to stay within scope of practice.
  • Typical client experiences on GLP-1s, including side effects, changes in hunger and food noise, and the emotional responses that can arise as eating patterns shift.
  • How GLP-1s can change the coaching dynamic – including reduced reliance on food as a coping tool, identity and body-image considerations, and new opportunities for habit formation.
  • Practical coaching approaches to support lifestyle foundations such as nutrition routines, movement, sleep, and stress
  • Where health coaching fits within a wider clinical pathway, and how coaches can confidently support clients while collaborating with medical and nutrition professionals.

This session is designed to help health coaches feel more grounded, confident, and clear when supporting clients using GLP-1 therapies – and to reinforce the essential role of coaching in creating sustainable change beyond medication alone.
