Who is this course for?

This course is ideal for anyone wanting a comprehensive and balanced understanding of the food-health connection to benefit themselves, their families and others It is also designed for those wishing to offer practical, informed and effective dietary advice in their current field of work, e.g. complementary therapists, health store personnel, weight management or dietary advisors in gyms, spas, salons, etc.

Study Outline

The main study modules in this 1-year course include:
  • Nutrition and Health – current issues around diet, disease and health
  • Food Composition – the macro- and micronutrients; health impacts of soil quality, agribusiness, food refining and processing
  • Understanding the digestive system – how we process food; what goes wrong when poor diet and stress take their toll; adjusting the diet to individual needs
  • Health for Life – principles and practice of optimum nutrition from pre-conception through to old age
  • Maintaining a healthy diet in everyday life
  • Cooking
  • Dietary assessment and advice
  • Counselling and psychological skills
  • Holistic approaches to diagnostics, diet and health; introduction to Chinese Medicine

Duration of course

One study year: September 2007 to June 2008  (10 weekends – Sat 10am-6pm, Sun 10am-5pm)

Assessment:

Students are assessed by attendance, classroom tests, formal exams, assignments and case study reports

Awards:

  • IINH "Certificate in Nutrition & Health".
  • FETAC "Nutrition & Health" (Level 6). Health’ (Level 6 award), in association with Bray Institute of Further Education (BIFE)
  • ITEC ‘Diploma in Diet & Nutrition’. , in association with BIFE, only for those who already hold an ITEC diploma in a complementary therapy
