Students’ rights and responsibilities

Students come to IINH to pursue their interest in holistic health and nutrition, to broaden their education and to gain a specific qualification. To facilitate the optimum learning environment, the rights and obligations of students are set out below.
  • Students are required to prepare for each class and to bring appropriate materials and assignments to class.
  • Students are fully responsible for any property that they bring into the college and the Institute takes no responsibility for the care of such property.
  • Mobile phones, mp3 players and walkmans must be switched off in all classrooms and during lectures.
  • Audio recording devices may be used during lectures.
  • Students will be provided with accurate and accessible information about all relevant aspects of their course, including content, assessment and timetables, before the start of each study period. Information provided shall be in the form of student handbooks and handouts.
  • Students will have adequate access to staff to discuss program matters, address concerns and complaints; and ensure timely, fair and constructive assessment of work. To facilitate this access IINH staff are available by email and in person by prior arrangement.
  • Appropriate facilities and equipment will be provided to support the learning environment.
  • Students are expected to participate constructively in the learning experience.
  • Students must be aware of information on course requirements, unit requirements and academic progress.
  • Students are expected to behave in an appropriate manner within the learning environment, showing respect for both staff and fellow students.
  • Students have a right to expect a work and study environment free from discrimination or harassment.
  • Students must act at all times honestly and responsibly in relation to academic matters and the use of the college facilities.
  • Respect must at all times be shown for the property of the Institute, property of the venue where classes are held and property of fellow students.
  • Students should recognise that cheating, plagiarism and fabrication or falsifications of data are not acceptable.
  • Students are expected to adhere to the proper use of copyright material.
  • Students should act at all times with respect for the rights of others, and to be sensitive to and embrace diversity.
  • Students sitting exams must adhere to exam regulations set by IINH.
  • Opportunity to be heard

All classes are asked to elect a class representative at the first weekend of attendance. The class representative acts as the link between students and lecturers, particularly regarding the quality of teaching and student learning conditions. The aim of the class representation is to help IINH improve teaching standards and resources. The class rep may be called upon to take up class issues with IINH on their behalf. Meetings between class reps and IINH staff are encouraged to discuss any matters arising for course participants.

    Feedback

In addition IINH requests students for feedback on all aspects of lectures and facilities. Student feedback provides a voice and provides the college with valuable information on each of the modules. Questionnaires are handed to all attending students on lecture days. Students are requested to return these forms either by hand on the day or by post or email after the lectures. Feedback forms are also available on the IINH website.

    Student Complaint & Grievance Procedure

IINH greatly values the views of its students. It aims, therefore, to manage complaints in a way that is sensitive to the needs of each specific case, and supportive of the college’s goal of providing an exceptional student experience. There are a number of informal channels through which it is hoped that most problems can be resolved. If, however, you need to pursue a complaint formally, the college will treat it seriously and impartially. A complaint can be made on any grounds by any person who is dissatisfied. All complaints whether written, identified or anonymous will be investigated. Students are encouraged wherever possible and/or appropriate, to try to resolve their complaint informally by raising it with the office direct or through the class representative. This may be achieved by a simple chat with the staff concerned, or by meeting with the Director. A grievance relating to a tutor may be addressed to the Director. If the complaint cannot be resolved, it should be referred in writing to the Director. All complaints will be acknowledged within 10 days of receipt. The Director is ultimately responsible for investigating the grievance or complaint and for drawing up an action plan for the resolution. The plan is recorded for IINH records. The Director will inform the complainant in writing of the outcome of the complaint.

    Fees Policy

Fees are set on the basis of a cost plan prepared for the programme. Fees and related charges are reviewed and published annually by the Director. It is Institute policy that all fees must be paid in full by the end of second quarter for the year of study. The Institute accepts no obligation to allow students who have not paid all due fees to attend classes and take part in examinations, except in exceptional circumstances.

    Payment Options

After initial payment of deposit, remaining balance can be paid 2 instalments (September and January) or 5 monthly instalments made payable by standing order. First payment is due by end October 2010, then monthly until February 2011 inclusive. Students will receive a statement during the second half of the academic year which details payments received and outstanding. Final exams may not be taken unless all fees are paid in full.

    Clinic supervision charges

Students have historically not paid for clinic supervision. However, a fee of 600 euro for clinic supervision was be introduced during the 2009-2010 academic year to reduce the considerable costs to the Institute for these clinics.

    Non-payment of fees

IINH accepts no obligation to allow students who have not paid all due fees to attend classes and take part in examinations. However, in exceptional cases where a student is allowed to continue to attend the Institute without final payment, the following will apply:
  • Students will not receive an official results transcript at the end of the academic session.
  • Students will not be able to proceed to the next year of their programme.
  • Students will not be conferred.
  • Any fees outstanding to the Institute will remain as a debt on the student’s account in the Institute’s student database and will carry forward to subsequent academic year(s), as appropriate.

    Fees Refund Procedure

Booking deposits are non refundable, except where studies have not commenced yet. Course fees are fully refunded, including the deposit, if withdrawal from the course is requested before start of course. An administration fee of €30 will be retained. A student may withdraw from a programme after instruction has started, and receive a pro-rated refund. The remainder of paid fees minus deposit is refunded with appropriate deductions made for each attended lecture weekend (or part thereof). The deposit fee will be held for deferrals up to and including the next academic year. Third party funded students must gain consent from their funding resource. Students who are funded by third party payers, such as employers, will have any cancellation refund paid directly to the third party payer, not to the student. Refunds will be processed within 30 days of proper cancellation. Refunds are made by cheque. Students who wish to cancel or defer must be current with their financial obligations to the school. Tuition charges and fees will continue to accrue until a student’s financial account is settled. Requests for fee refunds should be made to the Administrator in writing, setting out the reason that the refund is sought. A student is not considered withdrawn until a written cancellation notice has been received. Cancellation notices may be sent by post, email or hand delivery.

    Terms & Conditions

Places on all courses are allocated to eligible applicants in order of receipt of completed applications (which includes the appropriate fee). For a course to commence, it is necessary to receive a minimum number of complete applications from eligible applicants. If this number is not reached, the Institute reserves the right to cancel or discontinue the course. Students will be notified and a full fee refund will be processed automatically. (An application is complete when the Institute has received a completed application form and the booking deposit.)

    Equal Opportunity Policy Statement

IINH recognises and challenges instances of discrimination in society. The Institute requires that all programmes of study encourage equal opportunities and anti-discrimination (direct and indirect) on grounds of gender, race, creed, sexual orientation or ability, in its own practices. As far as possible, those who have responsibility for the recruitment, teaching and assessment of IINH courses, should implement this viewpoint positively in their attitudes, behaviour and day to day work. IINH is committed to promoting equality of opportunity throughout its activities (this includes its employment policy, publications, training, teaching and assessment procedures). No candidate for any of the courses should be disadvantaged or receive less favourable treatment or assessment (internally or externally) than another through reason of age, sexual orientation, class, ability, employment status, gender, health, marital status, race or religion. The syllabus for its courses will reflect a commitment to promoting equality in all the aforementioned aspects. In the course of teaching and learning the institution’s staff and students are encouraged to embrace diversity and must avoid the use of either written or spoken language which may be deemed to be discriminatory or offensive to particular groups.
